You get a mind-opening podcast called The Hansel and Gretel Code, by Curtis Cates, MD.
(However as usual, there are no swear words in this post.)
During the dark days during the Plague of 2020, a guy contacted me about another podcast I had been on, and then he started a podcast. It was the story of Hansel and Gretel through the lens of Jungian Psychoanalysis. Carl Jung was a Swiss Psychologist who gave us Jungian Psychoanalysis. (He's like Freud's healthy cousin, 'cuz Freud had some ISSUES.) Jungian Psychoanalysis is fascinating and when you take a fresh look at the context of Hansel & Gretel, with alllll the additional context, quotes, and information provided by Cates, you get a fresh take on all of it.
Fairy tales are fodder for the spirit, and this is no exception.
He goes through different versions of the story as the Grimms wrote it, and offers vital contextual information on church architecture, religious practices of the day, and a whooooole lot more. Hansel and Gretel is rich with contextual clues, indications, and little bits of...something etherial...and once you take a step back and look at it all as one whole, it begins to take on a whole new shape.
Oh! And yours truly is in it, too. I'm in the podcast, I listen to this podcast while I wash dishes, and my cat recognizes Cates' voice. I had a BLAST recording the English translation of the 1819 snippet.
As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.
: Memories, Dreams, Reflections
A while back an acquaintance of mine told me his daughter wrote her doctoral thesis on the wives of the Brothers Grimm, so that will give us even more fairy tales to sink our teeth into in the future. I hope you'll give The Hansel and Gretel code a listen. But not if there are small ears around, there's a lot of cursin' in that there podcast.
