"Zu..." no. "Nach..."

Wait! Which one do I use? GAH!

Have you said that before? I bet you have, as I’ve heard it from every beginning German learner I’ve worked with. And a lot of intermediate level speakers, too.

The difference is: with “zu” and “nach,” size makes a difference. But not how you might think.

 When do I use “zu”?

“Zu” is used for places like

• die Bäckerei
• die Post
• your friend Michael’s house
• die Arbeit
• die Bushaltestelle

These are, in fact, all smaller places. A bakery is small. The post office is relatively small, and the Bushaltestelle is, in fact, only an area where you stand or at most a covered bench.

Zum Beispiel:

Wir gehen zur Bäckerei.

Louise geht zur Post.

Ich fahre zu Michael.

Frieda fährt zur Arbeit.

Daniella läuft schnell zur Bushaltestelle.

When do I use „nach“?

“Nach” is used for places which are large, especially in comparison to all of the “zu” items.

“Nach” is used for places like:

• Kanada
• Polen
• Hamburg
• Italien
• Amsterdam

Das sind alle Städte und Länder! Städte und Länder sind gross!

Zum Beispiel:

Julia möchte gern nach Kanada fahren.

Birgit fährt nächstes Jahr zum ersten Mal nach Polen.

„Wohin fährt dieser Zug?“ „Nach Hamburg.“

Familie Schmidt möchte gern nach Italien reisen und dort Urlaub machen.
